Who breaks into a care home? I thought most people wanted to escape them not break in? Only joking! Most of the care homes we deal with are full of dedicated, conscientious, caring people who make a positive difference to the community. So when we were asked to assist with securing one from intruders and yet allowing authorised access 24 hours a day, every day of the year, we rose to the challenge. We are passionate about providing security to all of our customers, what better way to cater to the needs of this project than providing high quality care home security systems in the form of access control.

Care home access control is vital in order to ensure that those who are vulnerable are not put at risk. The main focus of this project was on having remote access to a safety deposit box housed inside the main door. This was due to the distance each key holder lived from the home, so a flexible solution was necessary. The system features our remote release facility, allowing access to vetted visitors and the emergency services. A secondary relay was used to allow the Management Team to remotely unlock the safety deposit box, exposing a back-up key, as and when required. This was achieved by programming telephone numbers into the authorised call list so that only recognised users could dial-in and fire the relays.

The site also needed the ability to call reception during the day but required the call button to be deactivated at night so that only authorised visitors could gain access during those hours. This meant that the residents weren’t being disturbed during the wee hours of the morning.

A coded entry keypad was included to allow numerous individual pins for staff and authorised access users only. To achieve optimum care home security, another requirement was that the back-light was switched off/dimmed out of hours to deter vandals. This can be easily programmed on a time period using the inbuilt time clock.

As with every individual project we undertake, specific requirements need to be considered, care home security needs differ from offices, residential etc. The next feature is pretty unique. As the alert inputs are a standard feature on all new Telguard units, they decided to connect the system to a set of anti-tamper contacts on the door, which upon activation sends a text message to a number of chosen mobile phones. This instant response may be customised and reprogrammed as required. This ensures that someone will be notified instantly if the care home security system detects a threat, meaning that the situation can be dealt with promptly.

All-in-all they were thrilled with the solution: enabling the hard working staff to continue their dedicated duties; safe in the knowledge a great British product is always on standby and ready for duty.
